This is top of my christmas pressie list. As much as I love linux and the ideals of the GPL/Free Software I am getting tired of having to spend time sorting things out that should just work.

The missus is going to kill me though ...

Yeah - that's the point I got to. I configured the hell out of my PC with Linux, and it still didn't quite fit the bill. This was perfect.

I sold up and moved over. On the plus side, the missus really loves using the iMac G5, so maybe that will bail you out? :)

Obviously it's fairly easy to dual boot linux distros, if you so needed. I've yet to find a reason to yet though.

Initially I quite enjoyed the setting everything up from scratch and if something broke during during an upgrade trying to track down what caused it. It definitely made me a better techie.

I'll get round my wife but I need to see if they have a finance option. I dont really have 900 quid spare at the moment. Babies tend to be a financial black hole.

Goddamit.

I can no longer bask(sp) in the glory of owning the top of the line iMac G5. After only 3 or 4 months.

Bah!

yeah - the only thing I'm taking any heart from is that my iMac isn't that far behind technically. However, to make it slimmer in the process of upgrading... they've done really well.

And that remote. Now I'm going to have to shell out 50 bucks so I don't have to get off my arse to rewind DVD's/skip songs etc.

Goddamn consumer whore I am.

Ugh, this is the first mac design I've really disliked in a while. That thick solid stand reminds me of a post-modern coffee table or something.

It's not like it's a new design... they've had that style for ages. It's just that they've shrunk the form factor down a smidgin. Have a look at one of the 3D screenshots on the apple site - it's actually a lovely piece of kit - that picture might not show it from the best angle. The fact that what you see there is your entire PC, and takes up a tiny desktop footprint, is really, really nice :)

Maybe your coffee table analogy is on the money though, given the "living room" target of the machine? :)

I honestly liked the look of the blob iMac before.

The movement of the monitor and everything so smoothly was kinky.

Aren't iMacs just an excuse for people to a) Look kewl b) Feel good about there hate of Microsoft, despite general superiority? And yes, I am away of Windows problems as opposed to Apples, but when being told that Apple was an alternative to Windows for gaming...

Anyone who says Apple is an alternative to PC's for gaming needs to be beaten.

My move was bourne out of sheer frustration and lack of time to look after windows. I tried many Linux distros, but MacOSX gave me the best of all worlds. The ergonomics and the slickness of the OS are bonusses :)

It's no flaming anti-MS thing for me, I'm just not prepared to part with good money for Windows, particularly when you consider what you get for £89 with MacOS X (i.e. more than just an OS). The OS is just a joy to use... it's not really got anything to do with branding or who makes it. I own a Microsoft Xbox... no qualms there, they've done an excellent job. Their development tools for the Xbox are supurb. I just prefer Apple's OS.
