Sonic CD On Mega CD

hi i just picked this up for the mega cd but with no instructions. i know the controls etc but i don't know what the signs : Past/future are for and how to use them. if anyone knows let us know plz cheers

go past the sign and run at top speed for around 5-10 seconds (when you see stars trailing behind) after that you will travel to that timezone which unlocks different paths/secreats etc.
