View Full Version : iPod Video tonight?
Charlie
12-10-2005, 12:25 PM
Rumours are suggesting (again) that the iPod Video will be announced tonight at 6PM (UK time).
ThinkSecret previously reported that tomorrow's event would bring 40GB/80GB iPods as well as Powerbook and PowerMac updates... but no Video iPod.
The rumor site amends its previous report with notes that the iPod updates may instead be 30GB/60GB iPods with video playback ability. They are quick to point out that video playback may only focus on music videos, podcasts and possibly TV, but unlikely to feature full length films. (at first).
Source: Mac Rumors (http://www.macrumors.com)
Will be a nice price tag on that I think. £300 for the 30GB?
Jordan

Hmmm... didn't they say that untill they got distrubution rights they wouldn't be making a video ipod? Simply because it wouldn't take off?
Schpickles
12-10-2005, 01:38 PM
rumour is that its Music Videos, video podcasts and trailers at this stage... remains to be seen.
We'll find out tonight :D
To be honest, I wouldn't really be that interested in having music videos on my iPod. I've got plenty of video clips (no, not that type) that I'd love to be able to watch on-the-go. I think the new iPod may have a 'video out' port where you can hook it up to a TV source and watch the movies or whatever though a TV, instead of the tiny iPod screen.
I'd probably pay about £250 for a video iPod.

iLounge Exclusive: New iPod revealed
iLounge has snapped exclusive photos of advertisements for the new iPod, which will be introduced today at Apple's "One more thing" event in San Jose, California. The familiar silhouette posters clearly show an all-new iPod model with a noticeably larger display, approximately 2.4 to 2.6 inches diagonal, compared to the current full-size iPod's 2-inch screen. Also of note, the headphone jack has been moved from the top-center to the top-right side of the device

12-10-2005, 05:50 PM
looks like an ipod but chunkier and with a prettier colour screen.
DS MaNiAc
12-10-2005, 05:52 PM
Prettier screen? Yes. Chunkier? HELL NO: The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod!
New iPod announced! The new iPod, as speculated, features video capabilities and the wider display, but it’s still a music-first device.
The device will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.
The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod (making it 0.44-inches thick—say wha?), and will feature a 60GB version (which should be thinner than the current 0.63-inch thick 20GB iPod), and editions of both in black.
The 20GB should go for $299, and the 60GB for $399. They’ll be shipping next week.
What’s the device named, you ask? The iPod. That’s it, just The iPod. Well spare you the Prince jokes. The iPod will have TV out.
Stevie has iTunes 6.0 up there—only about a month after introducing iTunes 5.0.
iTunes 6.0 will also feature video and the iTunes Music Store will feature video downloads (big surprise, right?)—at launch over 2,000 music videos will be made available at a cost of $1.99 apiece.

Yeah, considering:
20 gig = $299 = £175
60 gig = $399 = £230
Woot indeed, woot indeed.....
Oh, and heres an image of it from the side:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lucasrag/pics/ipod2.jpg
And if that aint enough for ya......
It’s not only music videos you can buy. No, Apple’s set up to allow you to purchase TV shows for $1.99 apiece. Get Desperate Housewives or four other ABC shows premiering on iTunes at two bucks an ep. Videos are native QVGA resolution.

Yeah, considering:
20 gig = $299 = £175
60 gig = $399 = £230
Those are the current prices in America, but we get them for £210 and £300 (I think, can't remember, the store is being updated). Educational discount brings it down to £190 though.

Wait...so they're scrapping what is the iPod at the moment and replacing it with iPod (with video) for the same price?
Thats not good for me. I wanted the current iPod for Christmas. If they're scrapping it people will want the new one, it will be helluva popular..
Here's some info.

Why keep flaming Apple stuff? Do you get Apple fans flaming in PC "OMG Windows died / needs another security patch..." threads? Just leave it be... we get the picture - you [personally] don't put form factor over functionality, and don't like Apple products... message recieved. How about just leaving those of us that do like Apple's stuff to discuss Apple products without this constant fanboyism?
Chris_Mac

It doesn't sound like he's flaming Apple stuff at all. Just that he's saying that Apple shouldn't really be selling the Nano for only £20 less than the much better new iPod.
Well that's what I think anyways.

Fair enough he might be anti-Apple, but wasn't here. I think Apple needs some constructive critcism though, otherwise they'll be able to get away with murder (a la Microsoft) and release obviously broken products like the iPod Nano. Remember, at the end of the day we don't need them, but they sure as hell need us.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. My MP3 player (iRiver H340) has been able to play videos for ages now. Just looks like Apple trying to play 'catch up' to me, yet somehow the media think its revolutionary. Show's how little they really know.
Unrelated to this thread, but related to my last comment, the media keep going on about the X360, and also watch out for the playstation 3, but they never ever mention that Nintendo have a new console coming out.
Schpickles

It's called 'PR' wooks63, that's what makes the difference.
I don't think it's so much that Apple are seen as innovating, I think it's got more to do with the fact that it means a lot business-wise - iPods are massive, and Apple supporting video and home multimedia in this way is a really interesting new rival to MS and Sony.

Cool, 30 gig or 60?
Jordan
13-10-2005, 07:19 PM
Yeah,Chris Mac thats exactly what i meant. Creative and iRiver do it too... I mean take this:
Zen Micro is like £20 less than the Zen Touch. Yet you get miles more storage. It makes no sense. Alot of companies seem to do it. Like Nintendo charaging £60 for the GB Micro.. when a DS is like £20 more.

it looks very good. what i meant by chunkier was wider, i dotn know if its wider, it does look wider, probably isnt. if a company has a product that has an image like the iPod does, then they can charge what ever they want for it really, both this new model and the iPod nano are going to sell, even though the nano is expensive in comparison, good luck to apple i say, but i feel sorry for creative and sony, their mp3 players arent going to get a look in the christmas.

I heard on the news that we wouldn't be able to download US TV shows due to legal reasons. Thus meaning theres only music videos and the like for the mean time?
Ashley

I think ABC have allowed for their shows to be downloaded, hence why they're on iTunes. But what im thinking is ripping from DVDs and popping them onto this iPod thingy.
Jordan
14-10-2005, 03:23 PM
Ooops, I meant to say in the UK. Because ABC obviously don't show them here. BBC/BskyB/CH4/ITV air them, and sometimes pay alot of the licences.
Ramar
14-10-2005, 03:52 PM
I would assume you can put Quicktime format movies on the new iPod. I just assumed you could, wouldn't be very appealing if not, thats like not being able to put your CD's on your iPod.
I ordered a White 30GB one last night. Shipping date isn't until 24 October though, so I wont have one for about a fortnight.
And yes, you can put any Quicktime MPEG4 video on it. If you do some google searching, you can convert any .wmv or any other format into QT to play on the iPod.
The downside? Only 2 hours video playback battery life.

I will indeed Moria. But I have an alarming thought:
We in the UK, unlike in the States, have to pay a TV licence for ANY piece of equipment that can broadcast television. That includes TVs, PCs, Projectors, and mobile devices. Now, I've got a terrible feeling that we'l never see legally downloadable TV shows in iTunes UK because of that. Do you agree?
Jordan
16-10-2005, 09:16 AM
Exactly what i thought. The BBC will be starting up their own service at the end of the year. However, you can only keep the files for 2 weeks and they have DRM so you can't use them on other devices or players.

They may get more things like the Pixar shorts, maybe some indepedant films. I dunno, hopefully we'll get something though.
Am I the only person/idiot who bought this from here? Currently, my order is 'Preparing for Dispatch' and should be here end of this week, beginning of next. I've already converted a few dvds into iTunes in preperation, it should be cool watching them on my iPod next week.

Pretty much, I spent a few hours last night importing a load of short clips into Quicktime format. Although it'll look good on the iPod screen, it looks like shit on a full sized computer or TV screen.

I converted a 50mb avi file and it came out as 200mb using Apple's H.264 mov format. That was only using 50% quality, it still looks really good at 320x200 (iPods screen size I think).

Bah, if you want a portable media player get a GP2X [ www.gbax.com ]
Dual 200 Mhz CPU, 64 MB RAM, 64 MB built in flash, works with all SD flash cards, 8-10 hours battery time, runs Linux, emulates a ton of consoles, works via USB2.0, has TV out, and it's 150 euro's on lik sang or 124 pounds on gbax.com itself.
You don't even have to re-encode stuff, it plays xvid and divx stuff with linux' mplayer, it even resizes itself now :)

But you have to buy memory cards on top of that. How much woulda 1GB memory card be? iPod is much better value (apart from the battery).
Moria, what software do you use to convert? I don't want to shell out for QT Pro and can't find any serials anywhere. I've been using a 3GP converter but the quality is poor.

A 1 GB SD Flashcard is available for around 60 euro's, or 41 pounds.
And this plays videos on a bigger screen for at least four hours longer on two AA's, can emulate tons of stuff and you can run all sorts of apps, much like a pda really..
My new video iPod has shipped, I'll post my thoughts and answer any questions you might have right here, it should arrive by Saturday or Monday.
