So I got a DS and my girlfriend too - that means we can play some games versus each other. That was quite simple to figure out but now I have some other questions.
I got a laptop with WLAN and now lets say I want to play Animal Crossing: Wild Country (NDS) with my girlfriend. Would it just work between 2 NDS without a internet connection? If not can the NDS only access either a hotspot, a WLAN router or a computer with the USB dongle?
I mean I got this laptop for WLAN and now I would feel a bit strange if the NDS could not communicate with my laptop at all. Alright I know that the NDS only uses a protocol based on current WLAN standards but wouldn't it be possible to leave out that USB dongle and go online with the NDS with Nintendo software + laptop WLAN + my broadband connection?

Bit confusing, but online enabled games still work in the sameway as LAN games if you want to play in a LAN ie. With your girlfriend.
Online only comes into play if you want to play with someone who isnt in the same room as you ie otherside of the world. And your laptop has nothing to do with it im afraid. You need a wirless router, connected to broadband, the DS will communicate with this. You can then use your laptop on the router too though so its not all wasted!!
Hope this clarifies!

You mean Wild world, yes you can play multiplayer without a hotspot in fact, you could play multiplayer now, but the other plsyer has to been within 200 feet of your DS.
Ahhh! I hate same time posting!

Sorry, but you're wrong.
His laptop has a wireless card built-in to it. All the USB dongle is is a wireless card. Your DS will work fine with the laptop.
Broadband ----> PC/Laptop (with wLan) ----> DS/Revolution
Broadband ----> PC/laptop (with USB dongle) -----> DS/Revolution
Broadband ----> Wireless Router ----> DS/Revolution

@All: Alright thanks for the quick answers!
Now the only thing left I want to ask is about that USB dongle.
After all it needs some kind of software to work I think (and I believe I also read something about that) so I guess Nintendo will offer some sort of software aswell?
I wonder if there may also applications for the NDS like a browser or something - or downloadable content.

But if you're using the wireless LAN in the laptop to communicate with the DS you will need another connection to your broadband, either by wired LAN or a wireless card.

Well I don't! I connect via a USB xDSL modem to 2mbit broadband hehe - so the WLAN adapter is only used when I am at university. Because if you use WLAN to access your broadband connection you must also have a WLAN router - so you are always on the safe side.
