View Full Version : Jim Merrick confirms "traditional" controller as well as freehand

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?
jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.
So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.
All worries abated then folks?

Nintendo will always pull through, never doubt them.

This is good news especially for Multiplatform games. This makes a lot of my worries go away.

Phew! Thats a big load of my mind ^_^
Go ninty!
This sounds great although I just wonder how heavy the whole thing would be with the freehand plugged in?

I don't think it will be really heavy. I think the controller will be really light even by itself.

I wouldn't think much more than a wavebird. which is considerably heavier than a regular GC controller itself. But you don't really notice. I'd expect maybe the same weight as an Xbox 360 controller.

Interesting, it sounds like a standard controller with the freehand sticking out the top. Won't look very attractive but will be functional. Then for the 1st party games and more adventurous 3rd parties we'll get the really good stuff.

Just listening to Iwata's speech and he mentions the "standard" controller which you plug the freehand controller into, too.

I was already hoping that they would release a redesigned Cube controller with the revo, for the old games.

Sounds good. I figure it'll just be a redesigned GameCube controller with the analogue section removeable. I guess the freehand is basically just that part anyway. Good news.
[Edit]
I apologize for the crudity of this image, but I think this is how it'll work. The freehand will somehow fix to a shell area of the controller, which I presume will be made available/shipped with the console at launch.

There goes one of my biggest worries...
...bring it on Nintendo!

Nice to hear. It wouldn't of been helpful for 3rd parties if it didn't

Finally, Eurogamer asked this most interesting question: Is the freehand-style controller your trump card, or have we got more exciting stuff to look forward to? Jim Merrick's said in reply: "Let's just say we have more surprises in store."

Does anyone else think those hands look plastic.
On topic, I was hoping for interchangable face buttons, but I can understand the difficulties so this will do.

That shell sounds like a very good idea but I really hope that Nintedo will not try to make more profit with components instead with games.
For example:
You buy a second Revolution controller + Analog stick addon + Shell and all are priced like "real" controllers. Don't get me wrong but stuff like 20€ for old NES GBA cartdriges, download fees for old games, etc. may sound that Nintendo really likes to make money with everything.
i expect every controller to be bundled with:
classic clip
remote
analog
I think Iwata said the Revolution will come with the "Remote" and the Analogue Nunchuk. Nothing on whether classic shell will be included or an extra though.

I also think that will probably be done like that.

or could the remote go in sideways into a wavebird like shell so you can still use the d-pad an the bottem a and b buttons on the remote?

The controller is really smal, so it can easily fit on a modified wave bird with a big hole on tope. Expansion port goes down, pointing thingy up.
That's great news. I just hope it means that developers don't get so lazy that they rely on this standard controller too much. So many third parties have bypassed the innovative features of the DS. I hope that doesn't happen here.

A regular controller was an absolute must, otherwise how would we get games developed mainly for all consoles? Not every company would be happy with the idea of making one game for PC/PS3/XB360 and then a completely different interface for the Revo release. With the option of regular controls at least we can still play regular games.

This is a good move, it means the third parties will be prepared to develop for revolution.
