I finally bought a ps2 [Archive]

I haven't, but I'll buy one in a couple of days. Why? Because I'm weak and I'm buying the console just to play Yakuza and Yakuza 2, because the games have a few small similar things to Shenmue, my favorite game series. :hmm:
As soon as I saw Yakuza for less than £10 I couldn't resist and I ordered it.
At least it makes me somewhat happy to know Sony will be losing some money with the console I'll purchase... :laughing:

But damn it has so many great games. I'd certainly give it my vote for it's awesome game catalogue. Oh exclusives like God of War,
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, Final Fantasy X, Suikoden, Devil May Cry, Okami, Guitar Hero, Gitaroo-Man. I could go on and on really.

I really do feel sorry for all the people that miss out owning such a good system, especially the people that don't look deep into it's catalogue, some gamers eh?

well all consoles should be owned.I mean they are succesful for a reason.but my favourite is still the gamecube followed by the xbox followed by the ps2(not including dreamcast)Just felt like every game the ps2 could do the gamecube and xbox could do better with better grapchis for the same price so why bother

You can get Makai Kingdom: Chronicle of the Sacred Tome and Phantom Brave off Amazon ( just picked them up myself ) quite cheap. Disgaea 2 is everywhere and Disgaea 1 can be bought off many people on ebay still sealed the same goes for La Pucelle.

Yeah thanks man I have Phantom Brave think I will try and get ordering these as soon as possible.

The think is I am so hooked on Yakuza, hopefully they will release the sequel over here, I love it the fact that it kinda reminds me of get backers anime.

Fixed your sentence. :) But seriously, yeah, PS2 has lots of good games. I personally don't care that much for The Ico or SOTC, but I do love PS2's platformers. :)

As Domster isn't here, it is probably best that I describe how God Hand's system works. Gene attacks by pressing Square, Triangle and X buttons. Instead of having pre-determined set of moves, you can freely assign different moves to buttons. You could, for example, put "pimp hand" move into Triangle, "roundhouse kick" into X and so on. Square button differs from other buttons in manner that you can assign multiple moves to it. When you do combo, Gene executes all moves assigned to Square button in sequence. New moves can be bought from the shop between the levels.

In addition of having "normal" moves, Gene also has Roulette that can only be activated when Gene is on the God Hand mode. When you start roulette, list opens and you have few seconds to select special attack from the list. Special attacks range from deadly whirlwind strikes to kick in opponent's family jewels.

Gene automatically targets opponent closest to him, but he can't block at all. Instead you do dodge by using right analog stick. If dodge at correct time, opponent leaves himself open for your counter-attack. Link below shows perfectly how game works:

Gitaroo Man however is bloody awesome. It is kind of like Parappa The Rapper but the control scheme is different, quite inventive really. It's also more like a battle between you and the opposite player as you have Attack and Defend stages.

Well I just bought Gitaroo after watch that vid, looks like a very quirky game. Also picked up Guitar Hero 2 today and Disgaea 2. I was listening to the soundtrack you get free with Disgaea 2 on the way home in the car, I only got to song 10 but its all good at the moment. I personally love song 7.
I have also snapped up Yakuza ( £9.99 off Game ) Shadow of Colossus (£15 off Woolworths site) and We Love Katamari.

What games do you have for the PS2 so far?

This thread has inspired me to buy more PS2 games-starting with the Final Fantasy non-platinum games, i'm also going to be getting most of the other Nippon Ichi games i've missed (aka all apart from Digaea) and GH II and MGS3: Subsistance.

What other JRPGs can people suggest? the only other major ones i know about for PS2 are DQ8 and Dark Cloud/Chronicle.

are the other NI games :- La Pucelle, Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave, Disgaea 2?

Depends how hardcore you are. If you don't mind a challenging RPG, then the Shin Megami Tensei series is sure to make you work your socks off. Also Shadow Hearts: Covenant is a really good and funny RPG.

Suikoden series is also another awesome piece of gaming.

I remember playing Dark Cloud when it first came out and I wasnt impressed at all. Dark Chronicle is supposed to be really good though. Also if you are after Dragon Quest Play.com have it for £12.99.

I haven't played Nocturne in shin megami series but started playing digi devil 1 yesterday. Its frustraenely had.

But I got Xenosagas 2 thats really good.

Been playing Katamari for a couple of hours and its weird as hell. The story at the beginning is very weird but also amusing as are the cutscenes. Many people said that the music in the game was very catchy and they aint wrong. Im still having a little trouble with the controls as I have never really liked using both the analogue sticks together as they are too close to each other but im managing. I have yet to try Gitaroo Man and Guitar Hero due to getting hooked on this.

Same for me at the moment. I packed away my Wii and 360 as there aint nothing that I want for them for ages and just have my 2 PS2s setup. Its fun catching up on all the games I have missed during the year, especially as alot of them are dirt cheap. Still need to pick up Psychonaughts and MGS3:Subsistence ( already played MGS3 just want the DVD movie )

Wonder if this thread should be renamed to the PS2 Discussion Thread.

Like Dom, the PS2 is my most played this generation and I really dont see how anyone that loves gaming can be without one - money aside. Plus I still have a stack of games preordered for it, which is more than I can say for the GC or Xbox, both of which are younger than the PS2. If it werent for their constant arrogant comments and some incredibly poor business decisions they could be amazing.

I was your typical Nintendo fanboy in the PS1 years, refusing to play it. looking back, i don't regret it, the PS1 was a very poor console. The PS2, however, is brilliant. I've played countless great games on it over the years, and if you like games at all you should get one.

I had real trouble with him, it was some Chameleon wasnt it?

Just recieved Dragon Quest from Play and the SOBs have sent out a platinum copy despite it saying it was the original, needless to say Im not happy.

Yeah, having just bought Disgaea 2 and Phantom Brave I know how good it is to get a free soundtrack with your games, more companies should do this even if its just for a limited time.

Nah it was Tarzans level, well not the level just the boss. Its weird as that was the only thing that caused me problems in the game, hell even Sephiroth was a pushover.

Also don't forget the worst level design ever is probably monstro just its hard to move out of the first 3 chambers.

MGS3: Subsistence arrived this morning and I have just finished watching the 3 hour " movie " of the game. I forgot how awesome that game is, hell what I just watched was better than most dvds I own.

Did another 4 Collosi on SOTC today, the 8th one was a bitch as it took me ages to figure out how to bring it down. I have to say its one of the best games I have played in a long time, makes me wish I had picked it up when everyone else was playing it.

Just bought Shining Force Neo, Rise of Kasai ( sequel to the underrated Mark of Kri ) Tales of Legendia and preordered Rogue Galaxy all from VGP, good times ahead again.

Quick question for Dom if he looks here. Just wondering if you have played Front Mission 4 and if so is it worth picking up as its pretty cheap on VGP. I havent played any of them before but I thought I may give them a whirl.

Front Mission 4 is certainly worth your time. If you like strategy RPGs then you'll probably enjoy it. While the story isn't as good as number 3, it starts of somewhat slower. The battle system is on the other hand some what deeper. TBH I'd tell you to get hold of the 3rd game as well. It was on the PSX, but boy did it have an awesome story and fantastic soundtrack. It also lasted about 70 hours as you had two stories to finish, basically putting you on both sides of the armies to get their point of views, very recommeded is the third game.

Tempted to buy (and by that I mean wait until someone cash trades one in) a PS2 for Singstar and Katamari.

Katamari is a great game - so un-PS2 really. It's one of the only two games I could persuade my other half to play (the other being Crash Bandicoot) although now the Wii is here, I can add Wii Sports and Rayman to that list.

I picked up this months OPM yesterday and just letting everyone know that it has a 45 min playable demo of Okami for those of us who didnt import. Havent had a chance to play on it yet though. Also it has a look at S-E history on the PS2 in the magazine aswell as FFXII and Okami reviews.

Okami is fun game, but interestingly enough, it one of the three games that make my eyes actually hurt and give me headaches. Other ones are Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari.

Just seen I didnt add mine. Its close call for me as I love both the Onimusha series and Kingdom Hearts. Devil May Cry is good but due to the overall shoddiness of number 2 and then playing as a younger Dante in number 3 ( dont get me started ) kind of tainted the series for me.

Ok I will go with Kingdom Hearts.

DMC is briliant and i though DMC 3 was better than the first, especially as Dante's clothes and body in DMC 3 were cum worthy . . . not that i go in for digital porn or anything . . .

But I personal favourite franchise created for ps2 is probably Kingdom Hearts.

DMC3 I must say is good but its annoying that enemies carn't be locked on permantely

Actually, I could, but my mod chip is one of the few that doesn't support dual layer DVDs, that's what I heard at least.

REZ was extremely rare until last year, when group of programmers* got really brilliant idea. They started to buy rights to re-print rare games. That's why you have been able to see copies for Rez, Skies of Arcadia: Legends, Cubivore and few other rare games for reasonable prices. New copies are completely indistinguishable from originals, and that has pissed some collectors off. :)

Thats actually two questions... I'll answer one of them.
To play both pal and ntsc games you need a moded PS2 or PAL/US Ps2 with a swapdisk. I would recommend getting a moded one.

To play both pal and ntsc games you need a moded PS2 or PAL/US Ps2 with a swapdisk. I would recommend getting a moded one.

Another possible choice is to use HDLoader if you have fat PS2. HDLoader is free application that allows you to run games using PS2's networkd adapter and harddisk.

Modded PS2 has a chip installed. This chip does everything for you.
A swapdisk is a Disc you run on the ps2. And then "swap" with your imort game. I think you need to do something with your ps2 Disc tray to make it work.

Try Ebay.

Hmm... I googled a bit now and found out that there are different modchips...
And there are some that can even be used to run a DivX/XviD/MP3-Player for PS2 and store it on the chip itself.
Now my question is which are good and which do have the Player-Feature-Possibility?

Although the question is if I don't buy just a US-PS2 because I so or so don't want to play Japanese games but just European or US-Games but I could also just play US-Games (instead of buying a European version of a game I could just buy the US-Version)...
Because a modded PS2 would of course be more expensive than a normal US-PS2...

Rogue Galaxy is one of my favs RPG'S ever i think...and i haven't even played it that long. It just looks great, easy to get into it and has a good story behind it. It really does remind me of Star Wars. I love the animation cut-scenes.

It's a beginners RPG which will probably get harder as you progress. It all just makes sense though, unlike most RPG's which are plain confusing.

It's a 100 hour game supposadely with loads of lovely Locations and a great cast.

It plays like Kingdom Hearts.

You'll love it.

I've recently got tired of the non stop online shooting games i've been playing on my 360 and fancied shutting myself off with some single player fantasy-ish games.

So i've just bought myself a ps2 along with Dragon Quest, Okami, God of War (and maybe 2 if the first ones good). And i've pre-ordered Final Fantasy XII and this snazzy game called Rogue Galaxy, any one heard of it? It's like Skies of Arcadia in space!

I hope these games are good.
