The chap at NOE uploaded the VC games early, but instantly fell asleep before he aw the big red flashing button reading "Wii Opera Browser Upload - Press at 12 Midnight". What a fool.

I just got Wiimail (the blue light) and it couldn't possibly be anything else than an update on Wii. It's 2.40 here so folks check out your Wii after 2.00 and you just might have the browser there.

..I think I shall wait and check in the morning, I'm getting pretty sleepy and deluded (I bought Need for Speed Carbon for the Wii with my brother.. :red:) but I'll give it a proper test drive (save your applause) for tomorrow, I'm too exhausted now (applaud)..

Shall hopefully wake up to Opera in the morning.. unless it's available real soon :D

..totally pointless post, I know.. but what are YOU *points* gonna do about it..

david.dakota
21-12-2006, 11:46 PM
Surely all of euopre would be updated at the same time. We'd all use NOE servers, right?

triforce_keeper
21-12-2006, 11:46 PM
So can someone clear this up for me, when the wii is asleep, does it automatically download the updates?

Destroy the world as you know it.

david.dakota
21-12-2006, 11:50 PM
Triforce, apparently not. The Forecast channel was manually updated by the user, with Nintendo sending a memo to all saying "hey, your forecast channel is ready, upload now" or words to that effect.

I read elsewhere that a manual update is bet because of bricking. However, I have no idea what bricking is.

Destroy the world as you know it.

..sorry, I didn't mean you.. I was pointing at that other dude.. yes.. YOU *points* ..yeh.. what are YOU gonna do about it..

ooo.. the Opera Browser is now available :yay:

Ok thanks mate. I thought this would be a perfect example of wiiconnect24? Oh well.

Man on x-mas day do I have to sit through 3 updates? Or more? NO THE PAIN!

Dani
21-12-2006, 11:58 PM
how do you do the manual updating thing correctly?

I test my wifi, then signal test, then it asks about doing a system update, which i did, it said there no updates available and i had the most up to date stuff - no opera.

Agreed about the ironing out things, its suppose to be a trial and the documentation clearly states that there are features left out that will be included in the final release.

bear in mind that the most popular sites will probably start making optimised views for wii browser. Wonder if nintendo has a showcase site up ??

when all is said and done, its a beta after all. The megaton will follow. And dont you just wish you had HD now for a proper browsing experience.

Hello, typing this from my Wii.

We're a band of vicious pirates
A-sailin' out to sea.
When you hear our gentle singing...
You'll be sure to turn and flee!
(Oh, this is just ridiculous.)

Come on, men! We've got to recover that map!
That pirate will be done for,
when he falls into our trap!
We're a club of tuneful rovers!
We can sing in every clef!
We can even hit the high notes!
It's just too bad we're tone deaf!

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

Let's go defeat that evil pirate!
We know he's sure to lose,
'cause we know just where to fire at!
We're thieving balladeers.
A gang of cutthroat mugs.
To fight us off ye don't need guns!
Just jolly good ear-plugs.

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

All right, crew, let's get to work!
Our vocation's a thing we love
A thing we'd never shirk!
We'll fight you in the harbor.
We'll battle you on land.
But when you meet singing pirates...
They'll be more than you can stand.
Oh! That was a good one!
No, it wasn't.

No time for song! We've got to move!
The battle will be long,
But our courage we will prove!
We're a pack of scurvy seadogs
Have we pity? Not a dram
We all eat roasted garlic
Then sing from the diaphragm.

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

Less singing, more sailing.
When we defeat our wicked foe,
His ship he will be bailing!
If ye try ta fight us
You will get a nasty whackin'!
If ya disrespect our singin'
We will feed ya to a kraken!

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

I'm getting so sick of you guys and your rhyming.
We're ready to set sail,
though the cannons need a-priming.
We're troublesome corsairs!
And we've come to steal your treasures!
We would shoot you on the downbeat
But we have to rest five measures.

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

Stop! Stop! Stop!
The brass is what we'll polish
And the deck is what we'll mop.

You say you're nasty pirates...
Scheming, thieving, bad bushwhackers?
From what I've seen I tell you
You're not pirates! You're just slackers!

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange.
And...!
...um...
Well...
...err...
Door hinge?
No, no...
Guess the song's over, then.
Guess so.
Hokay, back to work.
Well gee.
I feel a little guilty, now...

Man, that took a while.

the browser is very nice, but what was that block mumbo jumbo when downloading? seems like wii has little user acessable memory, but if so these programs shouldn't go in there.

Browsed around for a while- it's a full browser.

What does it need? Real Player support. I won't be paying for it until it does.
YouTube is suprisingly well support- flash is pretty good also.

BBC Radio Player support would be the killer app for Opera browser- it means you don't have to listen again to the radio at your computer anymore.

Set up my favourites to Google, YouTube, Google news and NeoGAF- that's about all I'll use it for.

22-12-2006, 02:45 AM
Quite a few things niggled me about it...

It cant play the latest flash files for whatever reason (flash V6+?)
The zoom could do with reworking, setting it to gradual zoom would have been great, the option to save images and/or music from the internet directly to SD card would have been good too.
A button to insert a new web address rather than having to go back to the main menu every time would be good, the option to switch the scroll method would be good, such as being able to use the D pad.
The ability to edit the web address of favourites.
The ability to view the address of the current website.
Why does the 2 button bring up favourites when you need to go back to the main page to insert a new address? especially when there's a favourites button there too.

Some of these issues will probably be dealt with, but with the amount of time they've had developing it, id say its pretty much finished.

What did impress me is the fact it plays youtube near flawlessly, didn't think the Wii would have enough memory to handle it, along with some of the larger flash files.

i made a flash/php/javascript based mp3 player for the wii you can upload it to your server (remote or local) then put all your mp3 files in the media folder then just point your browser to index.php.

ill be adding playlist support and a few other things this week you can download the first version here.

Lovelt. Simple and fast. I never thought they could pull it of in such a gracious and through-thought way, but they did it. It works and it's fast. Nothing near as slow as I expected and far away from what the DS Browser is capable of. Now if Nintendo could get the Shop Channel running this fast, Wii's off for aa spectaaculair internetianal (see how I made up a word here?) start. Looks and feels great, and N-europe is again one of my favourites.

The things certainly made a good impression. And it's incredibly small in size (about 200 blocks, that's no more than 64 Mb). Ow wait, for a browser, that's pretty big. anyway, the only downside was the loading and downloading in the shop channel. It took for ages and the 'classic' sounds that accompany the download are annoying if you hear them to much. Ah well, it's time for some Opera....

Hells yeah. Flash powered porn movies ftw.
yeah, this really is the best use i've found for this thing so far!

oh, its really tricky making long posts i've just found out. You can't highlight and delete text and you can only see two lines you're typing at a time. Eek. Also for single letter words like 'i' and 'a' why does predictive first type a > instead?

overall it is much faster and capable than i ever expected.

I agree with most of the cons posted here, but my biggest wish for the full version is USB keyboard support. Nintendo could team up with Logitech and make a tiny wireless Wii keyboard.

Other than that i'm impressed with this trial version of the browser.

Also, i'd like one mroe BETA before it's finished. Just fill my screen, and don't crash my Wii int he middle of Pure Pwnage.

think usb keyboard support would be great, but not sure if Nintendo would implement it. At the end of the day the Wii is meant as a family console..with the Wii in the lounge or whatever so having a keyboard lying around isn't gonna happen is it? They'd much rather have you browsering the net using the remote, to show how you can literally do everything with it.

I'm hoping somebody makes a Wii styled (?) flash based MMO (free of course) that everyone will get into.

gonna try this out on it:

I know we've written all the improvements we'd like to see but I've been thinking. It may not incorporate alot of these things, just cos I think it does achieve probably what Nintendo intended it's a simple easy to use browsing experience for use in the lounge/living room.

Whilst it is hard to do a lot of things regular web users are used to. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't see many refinements to the actual way it works...just what it supports etc...

Loving being able to use daily motion etc... watching sitcoms is a dream! cos of TV's resolution-full screen they look ok.

haha. predictive spelling is those words that pop up, i think. When you start typing on the Wii, words will popup above the tryping board. So it saves you typing the whole word if its there. Its also on the Wii message board I was wondering what the arrow was above the backspace, press it ans it turns red. This is also predicted spelling.

The Opera browser on Wii does support playback of movies on Youtube. Youtube seems to have broken something tonight, however, blocking Wii users. We will investigate and contact them about it.

Wilhelm
Opera QA (Wii)

Hi, I work at YouTube as a product manager. I also bought a Wii two weeks ago!

Today I ran the browser and it worked fine for YT videos for about 10 minutes. Then the links stopped clicking through or sporadically worked. After that the pages came up with the error about javascript or an old version of flash. I have asked the team here about the error since I have seen it here or there on various browsers. Hopefully someone knows what causes it and it will be a quick browser or server fix. It seems to be a detection problem when we do the check on whether the flash player is available. Why this would change after some minutes of running is beyond me.

More news as I have it!Source: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=167137

Fingers crossed.

I'm pretty impressed with the browser so far, don't reckon it'll replace my PC anytime soon but it's cool to have nonetheless.

Main gripe is that it isn’t full screen, (what's up with that!?) and that 20% of the screen is taken up with a big toolbar, they should really make that auto-hide once you move the Wii Remote off it.

I want Dailymotion to work, and so far it's just failed to load any videos.

I'll only ever use the browser when I can't be bothered to get out of bed in the morning. So I can do my internets stuff (checking message boards etc) wrapped up warm in bed without even having to get out to turn the console or the tv on.

Apart from that, it's functional, and loading is a lot better than I expected.

Having the browser randomly chuck my back to the home page is annoying, but that seems to be with the browser having problems with certain sites.

So far I'm pretty impressed, although I'd like to see at least some of the following:
* Better scrolling. I.e. using the d-pad and/or pressing A and B to drag the page around.
* Clipboard. Copy and Paste.
* Tabs.
* Maybe they could use the nunchuk for something, I.e. instead of having to go to the start page and having to click WWW to type an address, just press Z or C.

Does the 2 button remove CSS?

BTW....

http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/wii/ has reviews for all released and announced virtual console games. The greatest part is that if you open it with Wii's Opera, you will be redirected* into Wii optimized version. You can even read the text without zooming. :)

* Wii users can be easily recognized by their http_user_agent which clearly states what platform and browser they are using.

Tabbed Wii web browsing
December 23rd, 2006

Well this made things a lot easier! Histoplasmosis sent us a link which shows you how to do tabbed browsing on your Opera Wii browser. It is extremely simple actually! All you do is open up your Wii browser, and visit the address http://team-dsx.net/ds/basic.php. Once you go there, a little tab will pop up in your browser. You click the image to the left, which allows you to open new tabs. Awesome find, I just added this to my favorites!

Why is Wii hardware so crash prone?

Its not as if it's incredibly powerful hardware that its overworking itself. Or is it perhaps due to only being 1mhz more powerful than GC, it can't cope with the pressures of hardcore usage?

Why is Wii hardware so crash prone?

My GameCube probably crashed 10 or so times by the time it was as old as my Wii is now. And crashed quite regually until (for some odd reason) it was in a boot of a car that got rear-ended. Perhaps some units are more crash-prone than others. (for all consoles)

Well this is a bit of a bump.Brief Estimate of Final Version Release Date!

PN: So here's the big question; when will we be getting the full version of the browser to download on Wii?

Opera: Opera and Nintendo are planning the release for the final version of the browser for late March/early April.

PN: The biggest problem (Which is still very small) to do with the Opera browser is that typing can be very slow (especially for novices). There was a rumour that keyboard drivers were a possibility. Does that stand?

Opera: You will have to check with Nintendo on their plans to offer a keyboard. Opera would not be involved in this.

PN: Our last question is will there be any updates to the browser after this version, or is this it?

Opera: The browser for Wii will be regularly updated.

Source (http://www.cubed3.com/news/6945/1/Opera_Talks_Final_Wii_Browser)

I was expecting this in June sometime so this is good news for me!
And also being regularly updated is a bonus.

June is the time when we have to pay for the full version, they said it would be out before that, around March time.

Ah so they did, can't believe I forgot that.
I'm looking forward to see what's changed.

I would like:

- Better speeds for loading (although the current speed is actually mega fast)
- An updated Flash player
- More support for plugin content
- Keyboard released by Nintendo specifically for typing messages and surfing the web (I'm just thinking, this could actually be an extension to the Wiimote and use the same plug as the Nunchuk)
- Tabbed browsing
- History
- Address bar
- Better organisation for favourites

even if they just released a keypad like a mobile one as an add on for the wiimote I'd be relatively happy.

We should be able to plug in our own USB keyboard at the back, although they need to make as much money as possible so will most likely limit keyboard usage to their own branded one...

Do you need drivers for Keyboard? Anyway, the Wii is linked up using a program from japanese developers that mostly ignores all USB input devices. You can get through that fairly easely, but it's not the handiest system ever. Check your Wii manual for info on the company (web address) with something called PRMail.

yeah that is the case, hence why if you get a new one you can just plug it straight in.

Here's the catch: Java is an Operating Enviroment. Wich means it can run commands - Java can do a great deal of harm to computers. Java would interfere with the Wii Operating System, making it vulnerable, and Nintendo can't get virusscans on the system, now can they? Wouldn't hope for java. And Shockwave, well, it's an ancient technology I rarely see these days. I'm agreeing on the tabbed browsing and the Flash upgrade - but the opera for devices platform can't handle version 9 if flash yet, wich is a shame. And the third of your requests barely makes any sense... As if Nintendo would make the Internet Channel especialy for videogames...

You got a point about the security of java but no support would go against nintendo's promise to be the ultimate Web surfing experience on the Wii console and Nintendo can't really do that without Java.
As for shockwave, yes the use of it has gone down but it's still being used, if it can be implemented without any problems then Nintendo/opera should put it in there, power will not be a problem as the dreamcast web browser supported it.
As for the video gaming issue, Wii at heart is a video games console so why not add a function where you can assign buttons to keys? It would be a fantastic feature imagine playing alien hominide using a controller on newgrounds or SFO. That would be feature would be praised and loved.
Yes portable devices don't support flash 9, but wii is not a portable device and we are not getting opera's portable browser are we?

Official Press Statement from Nintendo from GoNintendo

Since late December, Wii owners have been able to download a trial version of the Opera Internet browser. After receiving substantial and helpful feedback from consumers, friends and family members, Nintendo developers have made a number of improvements to the final version of the browser, including:

* improved zooming and scrolling
* an improved zoomed font
* shortened startup times
* quicker access to “favorites”
* an ability to hide the toolbar
* buttons that will instantly type common preset letters, such as “www” or “.com”

More details about these and other functions will be announced in the near future. To ensure that the browser incorporates all of these enhancements, the final version will be available for download in April, a few weeks later than previously announced. The browser will remain free for Wii owners to download through the end of June. After June, users who haven’t already downloaded the Opera browser can go to the Wii Shop Channel to download it for 500 Wii Points.

I dont think you understand java.. It is a virtual machine and so it is impossible to 'interfere with the wii operating system. In effect a java applet should be no different to a flash application.

The two things I've marked tell the tale here. Nintendo doesn't want to create it's own competition, now do they? And second, the Wii is a portable device in the sense that it isn't a real computer - wich means it's a portable device. And that's why Flash 7 is included - since the technology is pretty old and isn't supporting Flash 9. And FLash 9 is a huge download (compared to the Wii's Hard-drive).

And no, perhaps I don't understand Java that much. I think i'm confusing it with Microsoft's Virtual Machina - what's it called again? Back in the days it was used for banking websites and such...

Ok Flash 9 plug in for windows is 1.3MB - http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Also Flash 9 is not a resource hog specs are
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/
Intel® Pentium® II 450MHz or faster processor (or equivalent)
128MB of RAM
Now we officially don't know the specs of the wii but the cpu is at least faster then 450MHz and the ram should be 128MB.

As for Nintendo don't want to create there own competition. users will own a PC any way so they can play flash games with a keyboard so that excuse is really not a good one.

Only 1.3 Mb? In download or unpacked? Even so, the RAM of the Wii is only 88 Mb - and you shouldn't forget it's just for running Flash - you're not running the opera browser included in those 128 Mb. I'm pretty sure they won't get Flash 9 included (could be licensing too - to be fair, Adobe didn't publish it for Wii, now did they?). Just because I know Nintendo isn't all up-to-date - and about the competition thing, I'm sure it's because of that reason. Why would Nintendo give you the possibility to assign keys to the buttons on controllers? Then they coulmd just have made all their cotnroller USB-compatible so you can play them through normal computers. Stupid idea in the first place, mapable buttons - there's no use for it. The most they will do is add USB keyboard support, but I higly doubt that.

eh? talking about running a flash file embedded in a web page, so you got flash, the web browser and the whole darn OS running in background, that is what the 128MB is running, not just the flash file. Unpacked Flash 9 is still not a very big size and you don't know for sure if the ram of the Wii is 88MB
But you could be right about it being a license issue.

Keyboard button assignement is a good feature, i am not the only one who would like to see it, might not happen but it would be great.

This discussion is silly.

Flash 9 is possible on Wii.
Java is not.

Flash will likely be updated, but Java probably won't be there. None of the Opera Device browsers seem to have it, so neither will the Wii version.

I dont know why everyone is slating the PS3 as though its a competition between it and the Wii. It doesnt matter anyway, all that matters is if you buy one that you're happy with it,not how many other systems are sold.

I bet everyone here would secretly like a PS3, but laugh at its 'unsuccessful' launch.
