What kind of processor have you got? It's probably not worth buying a top of the line card if it's going to be bottlenecked by the CPU.

If you want to save a bit of cash, get one of Sapphire's X800 GTO2 cards. They can be modified with a simple BIOS flash to reach X850 XT PE standards. Guide here (http://www.techpowerup.com/articles//overclocking/vidcard/127/1).

Not worth going with those ATI as they lack SM3.0 features. Chances you'd want to enable all options in new games too which the ATI cant do.

What prices are you looking at?

The new ATI are pretty much a miss. Outside of the top 512mb X1800xt they were underperforming against cheaper Nvidia cards. The 512MB x1800xt itself was only subjectively better as it is beat by the 256MB 7800GTX in OpenGL games and costs £100 more! Nvidia have a 512MB version coming soon.

I'd recommend a Geforce 6800 Ultra or 7800 GT/GTX to most people due to prices and performance.

As you can see the ATI are well over priced for what they are and only the 512MB XT is better than any Nvidia which happens to cost £470. The overclocked 7800GTX on sale is for £100 less. The stock for over £150 less!

Ladys and Gentlemen. I present Choze, delivering another totally unbiased piece of advice on graphics cards....

Choze all I can say is...

Indeed, although he has a small point about the 7800GTX versus X1800 XT.
Same proformance (give or take) only $100 more for the ATi card. Anyway, will you finally accept that SM3.0 doesn't do anything but do what 2.0 does... only faster?

You'll probably notice a massive difference coming from an X600 Pro to something better. The extra pipelines will make a massive difference. I went from an 8 pipeline cheapo standard 9800 to an X800 XT PE, and I was like "Guuuuh".

There's no point in him getting a 7800 unless he's got something spiffy like an Athlon 64 X2 4000. He'll only end up with a bottleneck if the rest of his PC can't keep up. Other than these new-fangled adaptive anti-aliasing features, I don't see much in the X1800s/7800s other than "Look, my e-penis is bigger than yours". The cost of a PC which would be needed to keep up with these new graphics cards outweighs my desire to have chain link fences look a bit better in Half-Life 2.

The cheapest is the BFG GeForce 7800 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 for £232. Go for that as it is also overclocked and likely to overclock further than most other GT if you need to. It is also SLI capable as all 7800 are.

The cheapest GTX is £320 if you want to stretch to that.

Both are miles ahead of your x600pro. The GTX has 4 more pipelines than the GT and is clocked higher. You could also wait abit for Nvidia's 512mb part and see if prices fall(unlikely as ATI came in too high).

I'd agree with Choze that your best buy would be a 7800 GT for £232, a pretty cracking deal.

Jack

That is a good deal, yeah. I thought they were still like £300. I'd go for that card then, if you've got the cash. An X850-flashed X800 GTO2 would be a great deal if you haven't got much money to spare though. It's all down to how big your wallet is now.

Hurry up and buy the overclocked 7800GT because its a misprice.

I would wait the x600 is a quite good card and to be honest I normally skip 1-2 GPU generations. If you really want a new one get a NVIDIA 7800 - price for performance is better than the x1xxx series from ATi.

If its a dramatic inprice then like f**k are they going to honour it.

Should do its the sam eprice as the cheapest standard GT. It might be on clearance or something too?
