Looks great, especially in the Wii compilation video. Has more potential than Monkey ball to me because it seems like a more "serious" game so to speak, be interesting to see how it turns out (it better make it over here).

This game is looking to be their most solid effort gameplay and graphics wise on Wii thus far with the games their developing [Hudson Soft] but most of them have vomit material graphics that are terrible, barely passable. I suppose they could still turn out good, Animal Crossing Style, N64 style graphics, good gameplay.

Loving the boxart for this game, it has a Pikmin feel to it. I read the preview in this months ONM the other week as I hadnt heard anything about the game before, lets just say im intrigued.
Boxart is excellent! I may buy this game if it's cheap, it should be £19.99-£24.99 shouldn't it?!

26-01-2007, 04:41 PM
It'll be full price. Looks great, my type of game - please have a good high score table system, I want scores for collecting stuff and how fast you go through the level, or a combo like Monkey Ball.
Also, who else wants the toys that are on the box?!

The box art is really class though, am i allowed to be swayed towards this because of its box?!

This game is getting an America release as well, but the name has been changed to Marble Madness and been given a real cheap boxart.

Really? So much more exciting bits of the game in there if you could just get through the slow-paced first 4 hours.
I definately need a new single-player (mainly) game i can get addicted too! I'm near the end of Zelda now, sadly and i'm sprinting through all my other Wii games as well now! So i need new games. :D

IGN UK REVIEW - 6.0
http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/766/766690p1.html
Unfortunately, just as the game's visual charms and crafty level designs are pulling you in, it's all over. Kororinpa tragically feels like an unfinished game, never realising its full potential. There are only 40 levels, with a handful of secret ones to unlock. However, because many of the early stages feel like basic tutorials, teaching you how to effectively manipulate the environments, things only becoming challenging around level 20. It's possible to rocket through the main adventure in about three hours and then there's nothing much else to do beyond beating your best times or trying to unlock the remaining secret stages.
Closing Comments
It’s hard not to warm to Kororinpa. The game’s cuter-than-cute visual style, jolly soundtrack and cunning level design are tough difficult to resist, assuming you're not a stone-hearted misery. However, simply too much of the game feels either half-finished or rough around the edges. There aren't enough levels, challenge is practically non-existant and the ill-conceived camera is an endless source of annoyance. It is possible to have fun with Kororinpa but that’s more to do with its boundless charm than gameplay polish.

I've ordered this off Amazon but I made a mistake and it's comnig in the same package as Sonic, so I have to wait a bit :( It's a good thing really, I have some important school work to do between now and then anyway and I still have Excite Truck. For those who've now played it whats the thoughts? Better than Monkey Ball but shorter?
i'm undecided on this. Monkey ball was a major dissapointment imo. If it plays more like the Roll minigame in zelda I think i'll like it.
i have a horrible feeling that monkey ball 1 is and always will be the pinnacle of this genre though, so i might just save the money and play monkey ball 1 again.

Despite being very easy and not having that many levels there seems to be plenty of replay value in here. Just like BlueStar said there are Green Gems to get on every stage aswell as Gold Cups. I have unlocked lots of balls and a few secret stages aswell as various new tunes.

I've played this for the last few days and here are my thoughts. Let's get the negative over first - the game shouldn't cost £35. When you look at it against other games where you can spend weeks/months just playing through once, a game where the first run only takes hours doesn't justify the price tag.
Right, now that's over, this is actually a really beautiful game. Where Monkey Ball is manic and frustrating, for a game that requires maximum concentration, Kororinpa has a really chilled out vibe. The carved wood platforms and calm music of the first 10 levels just made be feel relaxed - the fact that these levels are all very easy helped too though! As you progress you unlock more balls, which means you can make those easy levels a little bit harder - I'm quite liking the watermelon at the moment.
On the gameplay front, there are a few frustrating levels - one of the night town ones has you guiding your ball along lots of really thin roads with no sides - this took me several attempts. However, there's nothing that will have you wanting to throw the remote at the TV unlike Cobalt Caverns on Monkey Ball. The replay value is in collecting the green gems, which unlock secret levels - I've unlocked five so far, and in aiming for the trophies. There's also this weird thing going on where you can play a mirrored version of all the levels (including secret ones). I'm currently half way through my second run of the game and I'm using the mirrored option to mix it up a little. I've completed about 65% so there seems to be loads more to be done. I've got most of the balls - about two left to unlock but I think I must have many more green gems to collect - some of them are pretty tough to reach and involve you hurling your ball off platforms in a desperate attempt to hit them. The controls are definitely intuitive and I love the way it has you turning the remote over as walls become platforms. You have to be fairly dextrous at times but I never found that it got too uncomfortable.
Overall, this is a really neat game with great visuals and addictive gameplay. It reminds me a bit of Katamari with its quirky flavour. This is a game made by people who know that beautiful games aren't always about having the most realistic graphics. It's more about creating an atmosphere that draws you in.
I'd give it 8/10 - whilst the main game should be longer, the secret levels and multiplayer element mean there's plenty of replay value.

After playing a lot more of this game, completed it in 2player in two 2 hour sittings, I can say, my early impressions were wrong, Kororinpa is pretty fun. Once you get used to the controls and the difficulty picks up, its pretty addictive. Fun but ultimately not, in any way worth more than £20. Its a 4 hour game for the basic (non mirrored) mode.
Its still going on ebay as I have no further urge to play it through again. Good rental.

Now completed 83%. Got all the green crystals and have completed the 14 secret levels (number 15 isn't unlocked until you complete all the bonus levels). I've unlocked and completed two of the five bonus levels but need to get more gold trophies to unlock the others. I've completed half of the mirrored stages, which I gather need to be done in order to get 100%.

I just picked this up today, and am loving it so far. I understand that it's short, but that's fine for me at the mo as I only get to play games in short bursts, and chances are that once I'm done I won't touch it for a while, which usually means that once I go back to it it'll be fresher.
One thing though, has anyone noticed the bizarre display options?
4:3 mode = 4:3 aspect ratio
16:9 mode = 4:3 aspect ration squished between two huge black borders.
It actually flattens the screen! WTH!?!

I had similar bizarreness. If I selected 4:3 it goes to full screen as it should, if I select widescreem it doesnt look right. Wii is set to widescreen and so is the tv. Setting it on 4:3 is fine and gets it full screen, but its kinda odd.

Yeah, the borders appear above and below the image, squishing it to a 16:9 shape but completely ruining the aspect ration AND forcing you to zoom in on it to get it to fill the screen.
I just stick to 4:3 now... which is disappointing to say the least.
The borders will appear on every tv sadly, they do with mine!
I'm on the city-scape levels now and they seem to be a bit more of a pain in the arse, sometimes it really wants you to dislecate your wrist.

I found the key was not to hold the remote too tightly. Just hold it lightly and let it roll around in your hand when you need to turn it upside down. Don't make the wrist do all the work ;).
I've now unlocked and completed 3 bonus levels. I've got 16 gold trophies so need another 9 to unlock all the bonus levels. Getting gold trophies is starting to get pretty tricky though now as I've done all the easy ones. The bonus or space levels are a real bitch but addictive at the same time. I can't believe some of the narrow platforms I'm rolling along.

Picked my copy up today and I'm loving it. Unlocked 3 of the secret levels and lots of the balls as well, I have around 4/5 balls left to unlock. Some of the Green Gems are uber tricky to get and I can see getting all the Gold Trophies is going to take some doing.
Just reached Toy Land.

My favourite ball is the candy one. It's reasonably fast, which is essential for grabbing those gold trophies but I still feel I have plenty of control over it. It's easy to use at slow speeds too.
I've now completed 4 bonus stages and have done 43 of the mirror stages. It feels as though the end is in sight but I can't quite get there! Still need to complete the mirror versions of some of the secret stages and get that last gold trophy. Going away for a few days tomorrow so will be taking a break from the game (probably a good thing as I've played it every day since Friday).

Picked up this heap of garbage today, played it for one hour (with volume turned down, what absolute boring repetive music) and almost completed the whole game. Then returned it to EB for a refund (I wasnt the first to do so).
STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHIIT. I'm noway a graphics whore, but Ive seen beter graphics on a PS1. No way is this worth the price, and how dare people insult the Amiga "Marble Madness" by saying this is comparable.
And why do devs insist on holding the remote this way? Sideways is the way to go.
I haven't bought this one yet, but I'm seriously considering this one. From the very first videos I saw, I was interested. I like the light-hearted style. Can't wait to get my hands on it. But which one to get first? ExciteTruck or Kororinpa? I'm still playing Zelda, so I really shouldn't rush. But the March games are upon us.. Too much to play :|

I've unlocked all the balls now, don't really have a fav, but there are some pretty cool ones. It's a shame there wasn't a bomb ball included since it is made by hudson maybe next time.
To the person that said it lacks musical depth your wrong. There are a ton of songs to unlock (Super Star Solider for Retro fun anyone?) and the credits music is also nice. Best bet is to set the music to random and just go with it.
I think the graphics are fine. I really like the cardboard style secret levels, very nicely done.

You played it for an hour and claimed the music was repetitive because you hadn't unlocked more than one music track. Graphically it's one of the cleaner, sharper, better stylised Wii games. Dunno how you can claim Red Steel's graphics 'arn't bad' then slate the graphics of this, after saying in the mecury meltdown thread "its a puzzle game so who cares about the graphics".

I don't think you gave the game a chance! I've brought it and its a great little game, unless you don't like chilled out gameplay and want to kill things constantly.
The music suits the gameplay and theres tons of tracks to unlock. The graphics aren't ground breaking but they are very clean and crisp and no way look like ps1 games, its easily on par with the other wii games and I think its graphically prettier then monkey ball
Each to their own I guess, but I've racked up about 7 hours on it so far, currently playing on mirror mode, and loved every second of it!

Totally agree. I havent had the chance to spend that long on the game but it really is a gem. As I said earlier the Candy Land levels are amazing in their simplicity and I agree with everyone about the music as it totally suits the style of game as it begs you to take it easy.

I know the N-Europe staff have had trouble obtaining a review copy of this game, but that does not mean that they can just soil its name by throwing the term monkey and ball about. I think this game is 10 times better then Segas mess of a wii game.
I own both - and despite monkey ball being a longer game, its very frustrating and requires more luck than skill - the direct opposite of kororinpa...Dont let the preview put you off this game - the staff clearly haven't played it yet. If you liked the original monkey ball - you will enjoy this title in spite of its short life span...What would you rather have - A long, frustrating game that uses the wiimote as a substitute for analogue control? Or a shorter game that plays well and uses the tilt functionality of the wii in all its glory? Bosses were the last straw for monkey ball, It needs to return to it roots or take a leaf out of hudsons book :P

Well I could put up with the graphics if the game wasnt so simple and the music so crap. If the "unlockable" music tracks are as craptastic as the first one I wouldnt even want to bother.
For the price of the game and the ease of unlocking tracks the game is not good value. I expect ot to grop to the bargin bin very quickly, in which case it may be worth picking up.

While a lot of people require graphics that blow you away with new games I don't really feel it's always needed. I think it's a shame you let graphics decide what games you feel do and don't make the cut. Also the unlockable music tracks are well varied. Like I said before theres some wonderful Retro style tracks along the likes of Super star Solider, Bomberman, Lode runner and even Hector 87. But I guess been as you don't like the graphics you will quickly dimiss this Retro style music as well
I do agree it is easy to unlock stuff in the game, but I feel this tread in a lot of modern next gen titles now. Take Wario Smooth moves (lots of unlock and also unlocked easily as well) But I wouldn't expect to see it in the Bargin bin for a good while yet. The early relased Cube games took ages to drop me price. (Wave Race, Doshin, Starfox etc)
Besides once you have unlocked everything you can still try and get Gold on all Stages and get your game file to 100% :)

I got Kororinpa this morning, £10 after trading in Red Steel (which I'm very glad to see the back of).
Had a feeling this game would be my cup of tea, and it wasn't wrong. I'm really enjoying it! Love everything about it so far, the controls are spot on, the graphics (although pretty basic) are very nice and it has a great style to it, the various balls are hilarious (the cat one had me in stitches every time it hits the floor too hard and does a really high pitch meow!) And the music is awesome, I'm up to the city stages and the Latin style tracks on those are amazing, the retro ones are cool too.
The 16:9 / massive borders thing was weird though, it's as if Hudson didn't know the correct aspect ratio for widescreen or something. ::shrug: Anyway as pointed out before, setting it to 4:3 sorts that one out.
Looking forward to trying out the VS mode later on.
I gather it's a very short game, but is anyone that got it in February still playing? Looks like it has potential replay value in going for high scores / best times.

I got it on release day and got 100% completion last weekend. I played it through once pretty quickly but then realised exactly what I needed to do to get 100% and had to go back through several of them to collect the green crystals (not always in obvious places). Completing all the mirror and secret stages took up quite a bit more time - it broke my heart to have to complete stage 43 again!. When you factor in getting 25 gold medals to unlock all the bonus stages, you've got quite a game on your hands. It still doesn't take ages to complete but I'd rather that than something that takes me forever and I leaves me bored/frustrated. The bonus stages are a lot of fun and you reallly see how much you've built up your skill level throughout the course of the game.

The camera is fixed - it stays facing "north" and you roll around without it moving other than to keep you on the screen. It doesnt turn around. Some of the puzzles are built around that, and it's rarely a problem (so far, anyway)
Personally, I think the gameplay is better than monkey ball. This is how monkey ball should have been.
Multiplayer is just both of you do the same level on splitscreen, race to the finish kind of affair.

I've got both games and had given up on SMB. However, having completed Kororinpa I was inspired to go back and play SMB. It was a really weird experience trying to control the monkey ball straight after Kororinpa. With the latter, you have far more control and can make really tiny movements whereas SMB seems more clumsy.
I didn't find the fixed camera on Kororinpa to be a problem. As Gizmo says, some of the puzzles are built around that. Everything about Kororinpa is just better than SMB - the music is less annoying, the gameplay and design is more sophisticated, the controls are more intuitive and there is more skill involved.
RedShell
14-03-2007, 10:55 AM
Initially this seems to play very similar to SMB, but it's actually got much more depth to the gameplay than the first few stages suggest, and the game requires you to do a lot more motion with the Wii Remote.
For example in SMB you tilt the control 45 degrees in any direction and the table will be at its maximum tilt, but in kororinpa you can basically keep going and the table will follow suite, so you have complete control of the table. A lot of stages see you having to tilt by 90 degrees and continue to play with the Wii Remote on its side, the later stages then apply that to the forward and backward motions too so you have the Wii Remote pointing at the floor, it can get pretty tricky! :heh:
As for the camera well I've only noticed a few issues with it where sometimes your view gets obscured and it tries to make a very slight movement to let you see where you're going, but most of the time any object that gets in the way will just turn transparent, so it's all good.
it broke my heart to have to complete stage 43 again!.I had the joy of playing that stage last night, certainly won't be an easy one to get gold on that's for sure! :shakehead
Anyway, my file is at 51% right now. I've unlocked the...
...Flash ball, which is very cool as you can completely customize how it moves by adjusting response, speed, slide and bounce. It doesn't beat the cat ball though.
